how to have a mindful thanksgiving

November 23, 2019 Miranda Hammer

This post isn’t going to tell you to watch your weight this holiday season or to let you know how precarious this time of year is. You probably already know that Thanksgiving can be the tipping off point of holiday eating insanity, but it doesn’t have to be. Have your slice of pie (I will probably be having two), your mashed potatoes, and your wine this Thanksgiving and don’t beat yourself up about it. Enjoy this season, but do so in a mindful and present way. Sure, I am talking about looking up from your phone and actually appreciating your friends and family surrounding you but also to really be present with your stomach and your mind as well. We are all hopefully getting to January 1st - do you want to get there and feel discouraged and regretful and jump into a cleanse that may encourage yo-yo dieting and perpetuate diet culture? Or do you want to get to January 1st and feel like it is just another day of the week?

how to optimize protein with a vegan diet

September 13, 2017 Miranda Hammer

Protein is an essential macronutrient necessary for a healthy diet. Protein facilitates important functions including muscle, bone, and skin development; hormone production; and immunity. For individuals following a vegan lifestyle, optimizing adequate protein is not difficult, but it does take mindful consideration.

healthy holiday series: not so naughty nog

December 11, 2015 Miranda Hammer

You may be expecting me to say skip the booze this season to ward off any unwanted upward increments on the scale, but I am a realist and, like any good Registered Dietitian, I preach moderation. Enter the good ole' Eggnog, typically so naughty and loaded with cream, sugar, and booze - definitely a NO GO. To meet my festive revelers more than half way, I offer you the not-so-naughty nog. A vegan spin on a decadent classic that leaves you satisfied, minus the hangover and sugar rush.

crunchy radish hudson valley

August 12, 2015 Miranda Hammer

Last week was well spent in upstate New York's Hudson Valley. In celebration of my mother-in-law's birthday, we stayed in a lakeside house, cooked loads of local goodies, visited nearby farms, and drank plenty of rosé. Here are some snaps from our little getaway in the Hudson Valley.

cinco series - fiesta bowl

April 29, 2015 Miranda Hammer

Cinco de Mayo is one of my most favorite food-centric celebrations. Maybe it is the bright vibrant colors, the vast quantities of avocados, or the large amount of tequila? However you go about your festivities, be sure to make it healthful.

I have partnered with my friends at Whole Foods Market NYC to bring you The Crunchy Radish Cinco Series,  a healthier take on a festive holiday. The fiesta bowl is the inaugural dish for the series!  Over the next week, we will be providing you with healthful, nutritious Cinco de Mayo recipes that can take you to the 5th of May and beyond.

say hello to my little friend

March 6, 2015 Miranda Hammer

The are many reasons why sweet potatoes are rock star tubers. They are versatile, vibrant in color, and pack a serious nutritional punch. Their flexibility is highlighted in this dish, serving as an edible bowl for spicy and flavorful beans. These stuffed spuds could be a great dish at a causal dinner party with a few options of fillings and garnishes to suit your guests taste preferences. Whole roasted sweet potatoes are also a great item to have on hand. They can serve as a blank canvas and are amendable to a multitude of toppings and fillers - especially useful on "clean out the fridge" kind of days.

A Soup For The Winter Blues

January 9, 2015 Miranda Hammer

If you happen to be living in Hawaii and nursing the last few drops of that piña colada, then you may have missed the memo. It's freezing here on the East Coast, single digits freezing. The type of bitter cold that makes you want to hibernate until spring, never remove your shearling slippers and cashmere loungewear, and curse that infamous area of a witch.
