Superfoods Series- Bee Pollen?

Bee Pollen? Yes, bee pollen. Little granules that are formed from bee secretion and flower, grass, and/or plant pollen. Why would you want to eat this? Although not definitively confirmed in clinical studies, bee pollen is touted as being nutrient-rich. Some holistic practitioners believe bee pollen to be a “perfect food” and capable of improving athletic performance, relieving allergies, and boosting immunity. Studies do show that bee pollen contains a mix of carbohydrates, protein, and fat so, in a sense, it is a “balanced” food. It also contains omega-3 fatty acids.

*WARNING- Do not try bee pollen if you have a bee allergy. Additionally, because bee pollen is a very potent food, be cautious when integrating it into your diet especially if you are prone to seasonal allergies. If sensitive to allergens, consult with your doctor before consuming. Begin with 1-2 granules on your tongue and observe how your body reacts. Slowly increase your intake. Be mindful and careful.

When buying bee pollen, be sure that you are buying a local product so the composition of the pollen is similar to your environment. Also, make sure the bee pollen is pesticide and chemical-free. Due to its delicate nature, bee pollen should be stored in a refrigerator or freezer.

Some  “superfoods” are indeed not that super. It is important to be an informed consumer, to learn to navigate through health claims, and to not buy into hyped promotions by product manufacturers.

Before labeling bee pollen as a true “superfood” more scientific research needs to be conducted in order to provide validity to certain claims.

Below is a simple way to integrate bee pollen into your routine by topping a green smoothie with the granules.

Green Goblin Smoothie Bowl

Serves 2

  • 2 dates, chopped
  • 1 pear, chopped
  • ¼ cup loosely packed cilantro
  • 1 small cucumber, peeled and chopped
  • 2 cups tightly packed spinach
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • ½ cup coconut water
  • 1tsp turmeric

Suggested toppings:

  • Goji berries
  • Chia seeds
  • Hemp seeds
  • Flax seeds or powder
  • Cacao nibs
  • Bee pollen

Combine all ingredients in a blend until smooth. Place into a bowl and garnish with your preferred toppings.
